Staff shortage in government as early exit program takes effect

Local | By Correspondent July 5, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - The government is facing a staff shortage as a result of the implementation of the Early Voluntary Exit (EVE) program, which aims to provide civil servants with the opportunity to retire early.

Employees in various government entities have been struggling to manage their workload for quite some time. More than 600 civil servants have chosen to participate in the EVE program, leaving key positions unfilled. Minister of Administration, Planning, and Public Service, Ornelio 'Kid' Martina (PNP), has confirmed that the government is actively working on a comprehensive restructuring of the public service system.

A previous investigation into the government's functioning had already highlighted the need for significant improvements in the organization of ministries. It has become increasingly evident that digitalization plays a critical role in streamlining operations, a priority outlined in the government coalition agreement for 2022-2025.

To bolster the ongoing efforts to achieve a more efficient government, the report titled "Improving Government Performance" has been submitted for review to the Central Organized Consultation on Civil Service Affairs (CGOA), with the hope of reaching a mutually agreeable plan.

Minister Martina emphasized that the comprehensive restructuring of the government is not anticipated to result in any job losses. The focus remains on enhancing efficiency and effectiveness while ensuring that public services continue to be provided without interruption.
