Stabbing and Youth Violence Reported at Brionplein Over the Weekend

WILLEMSTAD - A man was stabbed around 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at Brionplein, in the heart of Otrobanda. The victim sustained three stab wounds to the upper part of his body, according to police reports.

Police units responded immediately after receiving the emergency call and found the injured man upon arrival. He was transported by ambulance to the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC), where he remains under medical care but is out of danger, authorities confirmed.

Old Dispute Turned Violent

Preliminary investigations indicate that the stabbing stemmed from an old personal dispute that escalated during a public event taking place at Brionplein. The argument quickly turned physical, ending in the violent attack.

Second Violent Incident at Brionplein This Weekend

The stabbing was the second violent incident at Brionplein over the weekend. Late Friday night, groups of young people clashed in a fight that was captured on video. Footage showed several individuals punching and kicking each other on the cobblestone square.

When police arrived at the scene, the groups scattered, with some throwing stones at officers as they fled. A 19-year-old man was arrested and taken to the assistant public prosecutor for questioning. Police have not ruled out further arrests in connection with the disturbance.

Ongoing Investigation

Police spokesperson Rosalina confirmed that law enforcement is investigating both the stabbing and the attacks on officers. Authorities have stepped up patrols in the Otrobanda area to prevent further incidents and ensure public safety.

Brionplein, one of Curaçao’s most popular public spaces, has been the site of several violent altercations in recent months, prompting renewed calls for stronger police presence and community engagement to keep the area safe.
