WILLEMSTAD – The Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature has established a special team dedicated to addressing the stray dog problem. The announcement came from the Minister of Justice, Shalten Hato, who indicated that the police are collaborating with stakeholders to tackle the situation.
So far this year, the police have registered 23 cases in which dogs have bitten people or damaged property.
Hato emphasized that, despite previous criticism, the police are indeed taking action against dangerous dogs and other animals causing disturbances.
There have been cases involving pit bull terrier breeds in bite incidents, and action has been taken against loose goats and cows.
He stressed the responsibility of pet owners and warned that owners can be held liable for damage caused by their animals.
In addition, attention is given to recent incidents of chicken and rooster killings caused by aggressive dogs. Investigations into these incidents are ongoing, and it is up to the Public Prosecutor to decide whether to initiate a criminal investigation.
Hato emphasized that the Ministry of Justice is taking preventive measures by increasing awareness of responsible dog ownership and other safety issues.
He confirmed the need for a coordinated approach between various ministries and local authorities to effectively address these problems.
