Social Economic Council evaluates MAN's pension indexing proposal

Local | By Correspondent August 8, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The Social Economic Council (SER) has weighed in on a legislative proposal from the MAN party concerning the indexing of civil servants' pensions. The bill aims to decouple pension indexing from salary adjustments, allowing for pension increases even in years when government salaries are not raised. However, the proposal stipulates that any changes would require approval from the pension fund.

While the council does not oppose the bill, it has expressed concerns regarding the lack of a comprehensive framework. The SER highlighted that the proposal fails to include an analysis of its potential effects on the General Pension Fund of Curaçao and does not provide a forecast regarding the broader economic implications. Additionally, it remains unclear whether the MAN party consulted with relevant stakeholders before drafting the bill.

The SER has emphasized that the proposed legislation carries various legal, financial, economic, and social consequences that should be thoroughly considered. As discussions around this proposal continue, the council’s insights will be crucial in shaping its future.
