WILLEMSTAD - Residents of certain neighborhoods in the north of Curaçao will unfortunately continue to experience smoke pollution in the coming days, according to the government's website. The smoke originates from an underground fire at Dam Pretu, where illegal waste has been dumped for years and then covered with soil.
The fire department and other government organizations such as Public Works, the Ministry of Health and Environment, and the Meteorological Service are monitoring the situation. A channel has been dug to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby palm trees.
Although the smoke pollution has slightly decreased, it remains significant. According to the Meteorological Service, the atmosphere does not allow the smoke to rise high. This means that the smoke remains low, which can lead to indoor discomfort.
When the wind increases and the atmosphere permits, the smoke can mix with the air, reducing the pollution. Since it is an area where illegal waste has been dumped, hazardous substances may be present in the smoke.
The fire department, along with Public Works (OW), is discussing possible solutions to reduce the smoke more quickly and effectively. Pouring water on the "oven-like" fire is not a solution. Water does not reduce the smoke and poses a danger to firefighters because they cannot see what is underground. The ground may collapse.
GMN advises residents in the affected neighborhoods, such as Kent u zelf, Montaña, Sta. Rosa, and other areas experiencing smoke pollution, to take certain precautions. It is advisable to keep windows closed as much as possible, and people with lung problems are advised to temporarily relocate until the situation improves.
