WILLEMSTAD – The Slavery Memorial Committee has officially opened its first office in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Located in Otrobanda, Curaçao, the new location is intended to become a hub for dialogue, education, and community engagement on the enduring legacy of slavery. 

The opening represents a significant milestone for the committee, which was established as an independent foundation on January 5 of this year. A second office is planned to open later in 2025 on St. Eustatius. 

"Only together with the communities can we truly make a difference," said committee chair Astrid Elburg. "Creating space for stories, insights, and intergenerational collaboration makes our society more resilient and stronger." 

The inauguration ceremony featured the symbolic passing of a torch from prominent activist Jeanne Henriquez to two young people, representing the transfer of knowledge across generations. 

The new office also serves as a public space, featuring a permanent exhibition. Organizations interested in contributing to or benefiting from the committee's mission can apply for funding via its official website.
