WILLEMSTAD - The Netherlands announced today how they will distribute the €100 million that was previously allocated for projects commemorating and remembering the history of slavery. The amount was disclosed on December 19, 2022. In a letter to the Dutch Parliament, three Dutch government officials revealed that one-third of the amount will go to the Netherlands, one-third to the six Caribbean islands of the Kingdom, and one-third to Suriname. The six islands are tasked with dividing the €33 million among themselves.
According to the Dutch government, initial ideas for distribution on each island are being further developed. In the letter, State Secretary Van Huffelen and Ministers De Jonge and Bruins Slot emphasize that descendants of enslaved individuals, civil society organizations, and governments will take the lead in distribution. They will also determine the pace of the process.
