WILLEMSTAD - The situation surrounding Dam Pretu has worsened significantly, with the illegal dumping of not only foul-smelling garbage but also chicken carcasses, much to the outrage of nearby residents in Pariba. They describe the stench as unbearable and warn of potential health risks, calling on the government to take immediate action.
What started as an issue in the Sun Valley and Sunset Heights neighborhoods has now spread to areas including Sint Joris, Kent U Zelf, Minguelitu, Kwartje, Montaña, Ma Luisa, Beurs, Oude Water, Hunde Water, Soledad, Weto, Janboos, Nabij Janboos, Popo, Montaña Abou, and Herst. This expansion has been confirmed by Giselle Rosalia, a spokesperson for the residents of Pariba.
Last year, the Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature (GMN) signed an agreement with the community to address the nuisance. The plan involved fencing off the area and banning illegal dumping of rice, meat, and chicken. However, residents claim that GMN removed the fence, allowing pollution and the foul odor to return in full force.
The community has now launched a new petition, demanding that GMN adhere to the agreement signed in August 2024. They insist that illegal activities on Dam Pretu must cease by April 1, 2025. "We will not be deceived again," said the residents. "The government is letting us down."
