Sint Maarten’s Finance Minister refuses to yield to pressure from Central Bank

Local | By Correspondent August 9, 2024

PHILIPSBURG - Marinka Gumbs, the Minister of Finance for Sint Maarten, has firmly stated that she will not succumb to pressure from the Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten regarding the future of the insurance company ENNIA. The Central Bank recently urged the Sint Maarten parliament to swiftly ratify an agreement essential for ENNIA’s continued operation, following a similar approval by the parliament in Curaçao earlier this year.

In a letter to Minister Gumbs, the Central Bank highlighted that failure to secure parliamentary approval in Philipsburg could jeopardize ENNIA's operations, which serve over 3,000 policyholders on the island. Gumbs criticized the tone of the bank's correspondence, asserting her commitment to prioritizing the interests of these policyholders over external pressures.

"The well-being of ENNIA’s clients is my primary concern," Gumbs stated. "I will not be swayed by external forces or threats. The decision will be made based on what is best for the people of Sint Maarten."
