Sint Maarten Cabinet falls after only 17 days

Local | By Correspondent May 20, 2024

PHILIPSBURG - Parliamentarian Kevin Maingrette of Nation Opportunity Wealth (NOW) has withdrawn his support from the current coalition government led by Luc Mercelina in Sint Maarten. Maingrette has opted to collaborate with the United People's (UP) party and the National Alliance (NA), aiming to form a more stable coalition. This news was announced today via a press release.

Maingrette expressed concerns about prolonged instability, lack of effective leadership, and lack of transparency within the current coalition. "After much contemplation and deep reflection, I have decided to withdraw my support from the current coalition," said Maingrette.

January 11

The current coalition, consisting of the United Resilient St. Maarten Movement (URSM), the Democratic Party (DP), the Party for Progress (PFP), and NOW, was formed following the January 11, 2024 elections.

However, it took over four months to form a Council of Ministers, with little to no information coming from formateur Luc Mercelina of URSM. According to Maingrette, the formateur failed to secure two ministerial positions for the candidates from NOW and PFP.

Maingrette criticized the lack of leadership, transparent dialogue, and effective collaboration within the coalition. "The absence of good leadership and the inability to foster effective collaboration have contributed to the current impasse," he stated. "As a parliamentarian, I must prioritize the interests of the people of Sint Maarten."

New Elections

Maingrette's decision aims to prevent a new election cycle, which he believes would further destabilize the nation. By working with UP and NA, he believes a more stable and effective government can be formed.

"My decision is driven by the desire to see our country flourish and to restore our citizens' confidence in their leaders," emphasized Maingrette.
