Silvania Highlights Urgent Need to Protect Coral Reefs

Local | By Correspondent January 28, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – The Minister of Health, Environment, and Nature Javier Silvania has emphasized the critical need to safeguard the island's coral reefs. Speaking at the Coral Happy Hour Fundraiser hosted by the Branch Coral Foundation, the minister highlighted the alarming decline in coral cover, which has dropped from 70% in the 1980s to just 14% today. This drastic decrease is attributed to climate change, pollution, and diseases such as the devastating Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease.

The government is actively pursuing sustainable solutions, including the implementation of the Nature Policy Plan 2024–2030. This initiative aims to combat biodiversity loss, protect 30% of Curaçao's land and marine areas, and improve water quality management. Minister Silvania also announced new legislation to protect key species such as parrotfish, mangroves, and conch.

In addition to policy measures, public awareness and education remain a priority. Citizens are encouraged to participate in conservation efforts through cleanup drives and reef monitoring activities. "Public support is crucial," the minister stated. "Only together can we create a sustainable future where development and conservation coexist."

The Branch Coral Foundation received praise for its coral restoration projects, including the successful cultivation of brain coral. Minister Silvania underscored the importance of such initiatives, which not only preserve the environment but also safeguard Curaçao's tourism industry, a vital economic pillar. "Every contribution, no matter how small, makes a difference," he said.

The fundraiser spotlighted the shared responsibility of protecting Curaçao's natural heritage and the urgent need for action to secure the island's ecological and economic future.
