Silvania expressing shock over extended wait lists at CMC

Local | By Correspondent August 8, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - Minister of Health, Javier Silvania, has expressed shock and concern regarding the extended wait lists at the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC). While it was already known that the wait lists for various departments were lengthy, the recent revelation suggests that the actual number of individuals awaiting their turn might be higher than previously estimated.

The issue revolves around the practice of placing patients on waiting lists. Not everyone who seeks an appointment at the hospital is being included in these lists, leading to an underestimation of the total waitlist population. This startling information was brought to light in a letter sent to the hospital by the Public Health Inspectorate on Friday.

Minister Silvania emphasized that timely medical care is of utmost importance and expressed his belief that patients should be placed on the waiting list after 6 weeks, a significantly shorter period than the current practice of 3 months.

The situation highlights the need for improved management of patient appointments and wait lists to ensure equitable and efficient access to medical services within the CMC. The ministry is expected to address these concerns and work towards enhancing the healthcare system's effectiveness.
