MARRAKECH - Minister of Finance, Javier Silvania, is currently representing Curaçao at the annual IMF meetings in the city of Marrakech, Morocco. This international gathering provides an opportune moment for discussions, and Silvania and his accompanying delegation seized this chance to address crucial matters.
One of the focal points of these discussions involved negotiations with the Norwegian State Secretary, Erlend Grimstad, concerning a fresh tax treaty. Notably, Norway had recently terminated the longstanding tax agreement that Curaçao held with the country, back in June.
Silvania's objective in these talks is to work towards establishing a new tax treaty with Norway that is fully aligned with international fiscal standards. This initiative underscores Curaçao's commitment to international financial best practices.
Furthermore, the Curaçao delegation also engaged in conversations with the Finance Ministers of Barbados and Mauritius. The primary aim here is to explore the possibility of creating new tax treaties with these countries. Barbados and Mauritius share similar economic strategies with Curaçao, focusing prominently on the international financial sector.
The minister indicated that these discussions reflect Curaçao's ongoing efforts to foster stronger international financial relationships and ensure compliance with global fiscal norms. The outcomes of these talks have the potential to significantly impact the nation's economic landscape.
