Local, | By Correspondent February 9, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Court Assembly has nominated Sigmar Carmelia as the new President of the Joint Court of Justice, according to an official press release issued by the Court. The nomination follows a vote in which the recommendation of the selection committee was formally adopted.

During the Court Assembly meeting, members voted on the recommendation for the presidency. Based on the outcome of that vote, the Board of the Court has decided, in accordance with the Kingdom Act, to formally recommend Carmelia in writing to the Ministers of Justice of Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten and the Netherlands.

The Ministers of Justice will jointly prepare a nomination for submission to the Kingdom Council of Ministers. This body, which also includes the Ministers Plenipotentiary of Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten, is responsible for taking the final decision on the appointment of the new President of the Joint Court of Justice.

According to the Court, the Kingdom Council of Ministers is expected to consider the nomination before the summer. The formal appointment will only be confirmed once the Council has taken its decision.

The presidency of the Joint Court of Justice is a key position within the judicial system of the Dutch Caribbean, overseeing the administration of justice across Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten and the Caribbean Netherlands.
