Shooting in Mahuma Leaves One Man Injured Amid Alarming Rise in Gun Violence

WILLEMSTAD – A man was seriously injured in a shooting incident Wednesday afternoon on Kaya Cartago in the Mahuma district. According to police, the victim was shot multiple times from a passing vehicle while standing next to his car.

Bystanders discovered the man lying in a pool of blood and immediately alerted emergency services. Upon arrival, the victim informed officers that unknown individuals in a moving car had opened fire on him. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the lower part of his body.

Paramedics provided first aid at the scene before transporting the man urgently to the Emergency Department of the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC).

The victim’s car, a Kia Optima, was seized by police as part of the investigation. The vehicle showed visible bullet holes, confirming it had been targeted during the attack.

This incident adds to a growing wave of gun violence on the island. As of early July, there have been around 60 reported shootings in 2025, a sharp increase from just over 40 incidents recorded in June. Authorities have labeled the situation alarming, with urgent calls being made for stronger action to curb the proliferation of firearms and reduce gun-related injuries.

The police are currently investigating the shooting and urge anyone with information to come forward.
