Local | By Correspondent October 2, 2023

DUBLIN - A Panamanian ship carrying a substantial drug shipment was intercepted off the coast of Ireland last week by the navy. Reports from Dutch and Irish media suggest that the ship originated from Curaçao. Marine officers fired warning shots after the vessel refused to stop. Special units overpowered the crew at Wexford, supported by the navy, the air corps, the Garda National Drugs and Organized Crime Bureau, and customs.

Onboard the ship, approximately 2,200 kilograms of cocaine were discovered, valued at 157 million euros. According to Irish police, it was the largest drug seizure ever in the country. Three crew members have been arrested, while the remaining crew is under investigation. The ship has been seized, and further inquiries are underway.
