WILLEMSTAD – The long-awaited sewerage project in Scharloo officially began on Monday with a ceremonial first stone laying, marking the start of a major infrastructure upgrade aimed at improving water quality in the Waaigat and the surrounding inner city.
The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Traffic, Transport and Urban Planning, Charles Cooper, along with representatives of Curaçao Ports Authority (CPA) and various project partners.

The project represents a significant step in strengthening essential infrastructure within the Scharloo district. Once completed, wastewater from Scharloo will no longer be discharged into the Waaigat but will instead be redirected to a wastewater treatment plant. Authorities say this will result in a structural improvement in water quality and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable urban environment.
Minister Cooper emphasized the importance of continued investment in infrastructure.
“This project marks an important milestone in strengthening Curaçao’s urban infrastructure. By modernizing the sewer system in Scharloo, we are taking concrete steps to improve the water quality of the Waaigat and protect the environmental health of our inner city in the long term,” he said.
The works will be carried out in phases and are expected to take approximately six months. During construction, certain roads in the area will be temporarily closed.
Curaçao Ports Authority stated that it remains committed to sustainable port and urban development that enhances the long-term resilience of Curaçao’s maritime and city environment.
Further updates on the project’s progress will be shared throughout the execution phase.
