WILLEMSTAD – A persistent sewage odor is causing significant discomfort in Punda, the tourist heart of Willemstad. The stench has become a major issue, especially during the busy cruise season, when thousands of tourists visit the area daily. Broken sewer covers and other drainage problems are creating a pervasive smell that makes spending time in the city unpleasant.
Local business owners have complained that the odor is hampering their operations. They have resorted to improvised measures, such as covering the sewer openings, to mitigate the nuisance. The problem affects not only tourists’ experiences but also the daily lives of local residents.
This issue coincides with a particularly intense period for Willemstad, with multiple cruise ships docking daily. On January 15, three ships are scheduled to be in port, further increasing the foot traffic in Punda and Otrobanda. Local authorities are under pressure to address the sewer issue promptly to prevent further damage to the city's reputation.
