Severe sentences for drug smuggling via Curaçao port

Local | By Correspondent June 10, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The Court of First Instance has sentenced nine defendants to substantial prison terms for their involvement in large-scale drug transports between 2019 and 2021. The sentences range from 42 months to 14 years.

This case revealed an extensive dossier in which the crucial role of port employees became evident. Four of the nine defendants were employed at the port and helped manipulate containers that were filled with cocaine and hemp both inside and outside the port.

The court emphasized the seriousness of the crimes by pointing out the significant threat drug trafficking poses to society, including the associated criminal activities. The misuse of their positions by the port employees, which severely undermines public trust, was also specifically highlighted.

Notably, the use of the encrypted messaging app SKY-ECC by some of the defendants provided essential evidence for the investigation. Most of the defendants invoked their right to remain silent, which the court regarded as a lack of responsibility and held heavily against them.

The case has not only led to severe convictions but also underscores the need for integrity among port personnel. The Public Prosecutor's Office of Curaçao is determined to take further action against employees who jeopardize the port's security.

The defendants have the opportunity to appeal the verdict within fourteen days.
