Seven candidates begin mediation training in criminal cases

Local | By Correspondent September 25, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Seven candidates have started a training program in Mediation in Criminal Cases this month in Sint Maarten, Bonaire, and Curaçao. The training follows the pilot program for Mediation in Criminal Cases, which began in Curaçao in 2022. The aim is to promote restorative justice within the legal system, according to the Public Prosecutor's Office (OM).

The trained mediators will facilitate communication between suspects and victims. During the mediation, both parties, under professional guidance, can discuss what happened and what is needed for resolution. Any agreements made will be considered by the OM and the judiciary during the handling of the case. Participation in mediation is always voluntary.

“Mediation in criminal cases is a valuable addition to criminal law and can be applied in all cases, provided the suspect is willing to take responsibility for their actions,” said the OM. It offers those involved the opportunity to engage with each other at any stage of the process and work together toward restoration.

The training and masterclasses are provided by experts from Amsterdam, with support from local organizations such as the Probation Foundation of the Dutch Caribbean and the OM. "This collaboration enhances knowledge of restorative justice and strengthens the possibilities for a more humane approach to criminal cases," the OM added.
