WILLEMSTAD – The Social-Economic Council (SER) Netherlands and SER Curaçao are joining forces to create a future where the economy, society, and environment are in balance. On Wednesday, Kim Putters, the Chairman of the SER Netherlands and Professor of Broad Prosperity, delivered a lecture at the University of Curaçao titled "Navigating the Narrow Path to Broad Prosperity: A Social Transition."
According to Putters, a collective approach is necessary to tackle significant societal challenges, such as aging populations, climate change, and inequality.
Putters emphasized that, despite their geographical distance, Netherlands and Curaçao face similar issues. A broad prosperity approach considers not only economic growth but also social justice, sustainability, and livability. The implementation of this concept aligns closely with reforms within the Landspakket Curaçao, aimed at building a more resilient economy and a stronger rule of law.
"Broad prosperity requires policies that look beyond financial figures and focus on inclusion, quality education, sustainable energy, and a healthy living environment," said Putters. According to the SER chairman, a moral compass is needed to ensure that short-term interests do not take precedence. Businesses and leaders need to broaden their focus beyond profit and economic growth.
Putters also noted that SER Curaçao has already integrated the concept of broad prosperity into its recommendations concerning healthcare, air quality, and the minimum wage. He called for a collective effort to create a fair and sustainable future, where policies are aligned with the needs of both present and future generations.
