September: A Month to Show Appreciation and Gratitude to Our Seniors

WILLEMSTAD - As is the case every year, the month of September is dedicated to showing appreciation and gratitude to our seniors. On July 4th, 2017, the Government of Curaçao officially granted this recognition to Fundashon Nos Grandinan through a formal decree.

Fundashon Nos Grandinan has already begun informing all stakeholders in preparation for September 2025, with the aim of making it a meaningful and impactful month in which the entire community is called upon to show appreciation and gratitude to our elderly in every possible form. By "entire community", we refer to families, neighbors, neighborhoods, schools, churches, businesses, competent authorities, associations and senior groups, media outlets, and other civic organizations.

Although the entire month of September is dedicated to honoring our elders, two specific dates are of special importance:

Sunday, September 14th (the second Sunday of the month) is National Grandparents' Day — a day to recognize and celebrate our grandparents;

Sunday, September 21st (the third Sunday of the month) is National Centenarians' Day — honoring individuals who have reached the age of 100 or more.

This beautiful month for our seniors concludes on October 1st, which is globally observed as the International Day of Older Persons.

It is important to note that the United Nations has designated another key international observance — World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, observed annually on June 15th. This day exists to raise global awareness about the risks of neglect, abuse, and mistreatment of older persons. Fundashon Nos Grandinan is a proud member of INPEA – the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse, which coordinates efforts around this date. It is a day of reflection on the many forms of abuse our seniors may face, and on the legislation that must be developed to protect the general well-being of a large and vulnerable demographic.

Finally, Fundashon Nos Grandinan calls on the community of Curaçao to take all of the above-mentioned dates into account and to begin preparing for the month of September, which has been officially declared by the Government of Curaçao as the National Month for Our Seniors. September is expected to become a month full of meaningful activities dedicated to our elders.
