Sea turtles on Klein Curaçao threatened

Local | By Correspondent June 24, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Klein Curaçao, one of the most important nesting grounds for the critically endangered hawksbill turtles and green sea turtles, is under threat, according to Sea Turtle Conservation Curaçao (STCC).

STCC reports that a new tour operator is illegally destroying vegetation by removing mats of "banana di rif" (also known as sea purslane). This vegetation is crucial for sea turtle nesting and preventing erosion. The eastern beach of the island, where all tour operators dock, hosts the majority of sea turtle nests.

By removing this vegetation, the essential dunes are being threatened. The dunes capture sand particles and aid in their formation, which prevents erosion. If this vegetation disappears, the dunes will vanish, and the beach will erode into the sea.

This means the beach will no longer be suitable for recreation. For the sea turtles, this translates to a reduced nesting area and destruction of nests by high water. Ultimately, the beach will become unsuitable for nesting, leading to the disappearance of the sea turtles.

Sea Turtle Conservation Curaçao has worked for years to protect this beach area. The organization is angry and saddened that this area is now being illegally destroyed for profit. For decades, sea turtles have nested here, and due to greed and tourism, this area is now being devastated.

Call to Action

The organization urges the public to join STCC in protecting the sea turtles of Klein Curaçao. By sharing information, supporting conservation efforts, and demanding immediate action, the future of the sea turtles on Klein Curaçao can be secured, according to STCC.
