Sea Turtle Conservation Curaçao: Healthy Turtles at Playa Piskadó

WILLEMSTAD - The sea turtles at Playa Piskadó are doing well. Sea Turtle Conservation Curaçao conducted a health check on the animals this week and observed mainly healthy turtles. The non-profit organization announced this on Wednesday.

Volunteers from Sea Turtle Conservation Curaçao, while snorkeling, did not observe hooks, fishing lines, or abnormal swimming behavior among the sea turtles.

The organization received several reports at the end of March of turtles displaying strange swimming behavior. The signals mainly came from animals in the bay of Santa Cruz.

The non-profit organization suspects that this is due to the sea turtles consuming pufferfish. The pufferfish is poisonous due to the substance called 'tetrodotoxin', which paralyzes the nervous system. Most reports came from sea turtles in the bay of Santa Cruz.
