SBTNO dissatisfied with appointment procedure for new CINEX Director

Local | By Correspondent August 5, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The government advisor SBTNO has expressed dissatisfaction with the procedure and selection for the new statutory director of CINEX. According to SBTNO, the process lacked openness and transparency, as the resumes of the three final candidates were not made available for review. Additionally, SBTNO raised several questions about the 27 applicants who expressed interest in October 2023.

The Curaçao Investment & Export Promotion Agency (CINEX) was established on July 31, 2014, by the Ministry of Economic Development. Its primary goal is to effectively attract and support foreign investors and entrepreneurs in seeking and establishing businesses on the island.

No Objection

Despite the procedural concerns, SBTNO has no objection to the final appointment of Miles Mercera to the position. Mercera left his role at the tourism office in Bonaire to take on the statutory director role at CINEX in Curaçao. However, the appointment still needs to be confirmed and formalized.

In the interest of transparency, SBTNO emphasizes the importance of clarity regarding whether some candidates were excluded from the process due to a lack of support from the management.

Moreover, it was necessary to clarify what was meant by "support from the management." Exclusion of candidates should only occur if it was clearly stated in the application process that certain candidates would be excluded or that no response was required for the vacancy.
