Sargassum invasion sparks emergency response in Boca Ascension

Local | By Correspondent May 1, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Boca Ascension, known for its picturesque bay and vibrant marine life, is facing a crisis as an overwhelming influx of Sargassum threatens the ecosystem. The Sea Turtle Conservation Curaçao has declared a "code red" as the bay becomes inundated with the seaweed, posing grave dangers to both marine creatures and local habitats.

Recent reports indicate a surge in Sargassum entering Ascencion Bay, raising concerns among conservationists and marine biologists. The Sea Turtle Conservation Curaçao has sounded the alarm, highlighting the urgent need for action to mitigate the impact of the seaweed invasion.

Last week, the situation escalated as the Sargassum sank to the bay's floor, potentially suffocating marine life and disrupting the delicate balance of the underwater ecosystem. Turtles, in particular, face significant risks, as the dense seaweed impedes their ability to surface and breathe air.

"Boca Ascencion has faced significant problems with the seaweed in recent years, but the current influx is unprecedented," stated a representative from the Sea Turtle Conservation Curaçao. "It's a code red situation, and immediate measures are necessary to prevent further ecological damage."

In response to the crisis, the Sea Turtle Conservation Curaçao has initiated collaborative efforts with the Coast Guard and Citro to launch a rescue operation. The goal is to safeguard the turtles and other vulnerable marine species from the harmful effects of the Sargassum infestation.

"The welfare of our marine life is paramount," emphasized the Sea Turtle Conservation Curaçao. "We're mobilizing resources and expertise to address this pressing issue and protect the biodiversity of Boca Ascencion."
