Sandals surprises Hensley Meulens during Curacao Baseball Week

Local | By Press release January 6, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Curacao Baseball Week 2024 is set to run from January 3 – January 5, 2024. Youngsters ages six to 16 years can meet and greet and also participate in clinics that will be hosted by local Major League players. The activities will take place at the Didi Deeds Field Play and the Tio Daou Ballpark from 14:00 – 17:00 each day.

Sandals Royal Curacao and the Sandals Foundation, in a show of appreciation and celebration, surprised Hensley Meulens during the press conference to officially launch Curacao Baseball Week. Team members, including General Manager Dan Waters, donned baseball jerseys bearing the company logo, and Meulens’ name and number to pay special tribute to him as the ambassador of Curacao baseball.

Meulens is the first Curacao national to play in Major League Baseball and the first local to tout various achievements in international baseball. Most importantly, he is the person who always helped other Curacao players. Meulens’ achievements are synonymous with the Sandals brand, which has accomplished many ‘firsts’ since its inception over 41 years ago, a major one being the first hotel brand to expand in the Caribbean and choosing Curacao as the first country to build a Sandals resort outside of the English-speaking Caribbean.

The press conference ended with a memorable gesture as the Sandals Royal Curacao team, headed by Mr. Dan Waters, invited Hensley Meulens with his wife Gyselle, Prime Minister Pisas and Minister Cijntje to witness Dan Waters pitching the baseball to Meulens signaling the official tribute of this moment.

Both Sandals and the Sandals Foundation recognize the importance of sport and in particular baseball in Curacao, and are committed to working alongside local organizations in 2024 to continue to build on this great sport.
