WILLEMSTAD – San Martin de Porres Parish is launching a fundraising campaign in August and September to renovate the roof of its church in Seru Papaya. The roof has been leaking during every rainfall, causing damage to the walls, ceiling, and pews.
Church Faces Major Renovation Challenge
The parish’s pastoral team acknowledges the significant challenge this campaign presents but remains optimistic. They are hopeful for financial support from residents of the five neighborhoods in the parish and from the wider community across Curaçao.
A Struggling Neighborhood
According to the latest census, Seru Fortuna/Seru Papaya, home to approximately 6,000 people, is the poorest neighborhood in Curaçao. In addition to poverty, the area faces various social issues, including high youth unemployment and crime. Many young people in the community have been caught in a cycle of crime due to social and economic circumstances.
Despite these challenges, the parish also recognizes some positive developments in the area. Local youth engage in sports, people sell homemade products to support themselves, and families seek spirituality, attending Mass to pray.
The Church as a Community Hub
The parish priests and pastoral team aim to make the church a central point where all five neighborhoods come together, fostering a vibrant and active parish. The church remains focused on the spiritual well-being of all its residents.
The pastoral team also strives to bring people back to church and restore Christian values, particularly among young people.
Fundraising with Coupon Sales
Pastor Curtis Meris, the parish administrator, and Pastor Ivan Dario are calling on the entire community to help with the roof repairs on behalf of all parishioners, churchgoers, and the pastoral team.
While weekly collections cover the basic costs of the church, additional funds are needed for special projects like this renovation. To raise the necessary funds, the parish is offering coupons for sale at 20 guilders each. Booklets containing 25 coupons, totaling 500 guilders, are available for purchase. Those who are able to contribute more can buy multiple booklets.
This fundraising effort is crucial for maintaining the church and ensuring it continues to serve as a beacon of faith and community support in Seru Papaya.
