BRUSSELS - Samira Rafaela, delegation leader for D66 in the European Parliament, is stepping down. From July 2024, she will pass the baton. This marks a provisional end to the political career of a passionate European politician with Caribbean roots.
"Over the past few years, I have been dedicated to D66 in the European Parliament with great passion. That's why I had applied for a place on the D66 list for the next European elections. After discussions, I have decided not to return to the list.
In May of last year, Rafaela faced controversy within D66, but after a thorough investigation by the party's disputes committee, her name was cleared. However, those involved in the false accusation were never held accountable for their behavior.
Rafaela's mission in Europe is certainly not finished, according to the 34-year-old politician. "In any case, I look back with pride on my work and will continue to dedicate myself to the European Parliament until the installation of the new parliament in July."
In the European Parliament, Rafaela reflects on several groundbreaking successes, such as her new law on wage transparency and the law against forced labor, effectively combating discrimination and racism in Europe, and involving Caribbean residents in Europe.
In 2019, she became the first Dutch Member of the European Parliament with Afro-Caribbean roots. An important mission for her was involving overseas countries and territories in European policies and legislation.
