Saharan Dust Reached ABC Islands, Affecting Air Quality

Local | By Correspondent December 27, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - This week, the ABC Islands experienced a significant influx of Saharan dust from the North African desert, according to the Caribbean Weather Center.

Meteorologists reported that the dust cloud reached the islands on Monday afternoon, creating a haze that lingered until Thursday. The phenomenon led to reduced air quality, particularly on Tuesday and Wednesday, before the concentration gradually declined.

Impact on Weather and Air Quality

Despite the presence of Saharan dust, the weather remained stable with partly cloudy skies and the occasional brief, localized rain shower, especially between Tuesday and Thursday. Temperatures ranged from daytime highs of 32°C (90°F) to nighttime lows of 26°C (79°F).

Residents were advised to exercise caution, especially those sensitive to airborne dust, as the reduced air quality could exacerbate respiratory issues.

The arrival of Saharan dust is a recurring phenomenon in the Caribbean, often impacting weather conditions and air quality during specific times of the year.
