THE HAGUE - Prime Minister Mark Rutte must uphold the promises he made to Curaçao. According to MFK and PNP parties, Rutte made statements during a working visit to the island, expressing his intention to "earn a lot of money by doing business with Curaçao."
According to coalition parties PNP and MFK, it's time for the Netherlands to fulfill those promises. So far, little progress has been observed, and the financial situation on Curaçao can still improve significantly.
For this purpose, an amendment to the Netherlands Curaçao Tax Regulation is necessary, which is currently being implemented. Nevertheless, both governing parties wonder whether this regulation might have drawbacks for the island, such as missing out on investments. In their view, Curaçao is being labeled as a "tax haven," a place where residents pay little tax on wealth, income, and profits.
PNP also wants to know which country will receive the taxes that Curaçao might miss out on as its income, as they are being taxed in a different country than they should, namely in Curaçao.
