Ruthsella Agueda Jansen Appointed Acting Governor of Curaçao

THE HAGUE, WILLEMSTAD - The Council of Ministers of the Kingdom has announced the appointment of Ruthsella Agueda Jansen as the new Acting Governor of Curaçao, following the end of Michèle Russel–Capriles’ term on September 1.

According to an official statement from the Dutch Council of Ministers, Jansen was nominated by the Government of Curaçao and approved by the Kingdom Council. She will serve a six-year term, as established by Royal Decree.

Jansen brings extensive experience in both the public and private sectors. Until her retirement in February 2024, she served as Deputy Director of Maduro & Curiëls Bank (MCB), one of the island’s leading financial institutions. Earlier in her career, she held several senior positions within Curaçao’s government departments, gaining significant expertise in administration and public policy.

Beyond her professional career, Jansen has played an active role in civic and diplomatic affairs. She previously served as Honorary Consul-General of Canada for Aruba, Curaçao, and Bonaire, and was a member of the Complaints Advisory Committee of the Common Court of Justice for Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, and the BES islands (Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba).

Her appointment marks the continuation of a period of transition within Curaçao’s representation of the Kingdom, as the Acting Governor plays a crucial role in maintaining the constitutional link between the island and the Netherlands.

The government expressed confidence that Ruthsella Agueda Jansen’s leadership and experience will strengthen the office of the Governor and contribute to the ongoing development and stability of Curaçao’s institutions.
