Residents of Penstraat are concerned that the current infrastructure cannot accommodate Pen Resort

Pen Resort is facing several challenges to continue with the construction.

WILLEMSTAD - During the summary proceedings where the court determined that the construction permit for Pen Resort was annulled, it was noted that the construction discussion was quite technical.

Two residents of Penstraat jointly initiated the case in court against the Ministry of Spatial Planning (VVRP) with Pen Resort B.V. Besides the discussion about the height of the Pen Resort building, it can be noted that the residents had different concerns about whether the current infrastructure could accommodate a 300-room hotel at the entrance of Penstraat.

From the court verdict, lawyer Achim Henriquez, who defended the residents, led a rather technical discussion about the current infrastructure. Besides the building height, which is also a concern, the residents had other concerns as well. Despite these additional concerns, the court ruled that these concerns were not valid since the ROP advisory concluded that Pen Resort had taken into account the majority of attention points for the adaptation of the infrastructure.

The residents were concerned about the use of construction materials, worried about the traffic situation, concerned about additional pressure on the sewage system, and finally, the residents were worried that there would be additional traffic disturbances during nighttime.

From the court verdict, all the mentioned points of concern were found to have no basis, as the court did not accept the arguments presented by the residents' defense. Thus, the ROP from the Ministry of VVRP analyzed the construction plan where it concluded that the building is constructed with blocks and plastered, indicating that there is no indication that the construction materials are not adequate.

Furthermore, the concern about the sewage system was also analyzed by the ROP. According to information, the UOW service will ensure that the Pen Resort sewage system is integrated into the current system, so there is no reason to question this. Moreover, it was found that the Pen Resort construction plan takes the sewage situation into account, making it unnecessary to be a concern. However, in collaboration with UOW, the Pen Resort sewage system will be connected to the current infrastructure of the area.
