Residents of Lagun Restore Beach on Their Own Initiative

Local | By Correspondent December 27, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Residents of Lagun have taken matters into their own hands, restoring their local beach on Saturday after months of inactivity by the authorities. Using sand that had been stored on the nearby parking lot, they covered excavation sites and removed construction debris left from an abandoned project. By the end of the morning, the beach had been restored to a natural state.

Grassroots Action

The restoration began at 7 a.m. when a small group of residents arrived with a backhoe and a truck to redistribute sand and clear away cement blocks and foundation remnants. Within hours, they transformed the beach back into an inviting space for locals and visitors.

Protest Against Government Plans

The initiative follows months of discontent sparked by government construction at Playa Lagun. In October, work began on a modern concrete beach bar, which immediately drew protests from both residents and tourists who criticized its design as out of place for the natural surroundings.

As a result, construction was halted, and the government promised to redesign the project with a more natural aesthetic. However, no progress has been made since, leaving the beach marred by exposed trenches, cement block piles, and an incomplete foundation.

Residents Take Action

Frustrated by the lack of government follow-through, residents decided to act just before Christmas. Using sand that had been removed during the original construction and stored on-site, they repaired the damage without introducing new materials.

“The beach was left in a state that was not appealing for visitors or our community,” said one resident involved in the effort.

A Nod to History

The only remnants of concrete left at Playa Lagun now are the foundations of former fishing huts that once stood on the beach years ago, blending more naturally with the area than the abandoned modern project.

The residents hope their actions will inspire authorities to prioritize sustainable and community-centered projects in the future. For now, their grassroots efforts have returned the beach to its original charm, ensuring it remains a welcoming spot for all.
