WILLEMSTAD - The 'Union di Habitantenan di Pariba', a group of concerned residents from the Dam Pretu area, has launched a strong campaign against the ongoing environmental pollution plaguing their neighborhood. The group demands that the government and relevant authorities intervene to put an end to illegal dumping and the spread of pollutants threatening the health of the community.
Prolonged exposure to pollution has led to health problems among residents, such as persistent cold symptoms and respiratory issues. Additionally, pets are becoming ill or suffocating due to the polluted air. Many elderly residents, who have spent most of their lives in the neighborhood, no longer feel safe in their own homes due to the poor air quality and unhygienic conditions resulting from the pollution.
Since 2016, multiple reports have been compiled on the situation, but according to residents, the government has taken no significant action to address the problems. Frustration is mounting as promises go unfulfilled and illegal practices persist. The 'Union di Habitantenan di Pariba' asserts that while some officials pay attention to the issue, there is no real progress being made.
The residents' association has now initiated a petition and calls on the community to sign it to increase pressure on the government. They want stricter controls at the entrances to the Dam Pretu and Choloma areas, and they demand that a sustainable use be found for the lands, such as for livestock farming, agriculture, or recreation.
In their fight for a better living environment, they emphasize the need for a collective effort and active participation of all stakeholders to find a solution. The goal is not only to address the current situation but also to provide future generations with a healthier and safer living environment.
