Residents Around Dam Pretu in Sint Joris to Receive Relief from Odor and Fly Issues

Local | By Correspondent April 2, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – Residents living around Dam Pretu in Sint Joris have long been dealing with the unpleasant smell and fly nuisance caused by the storage of chicken manure. In response, the Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature (GMN) has announced measures aimed at reducing the disturbance.

A key component of the approach is the introduction of a complaint registration system. Residents experiencing nuisance can now report it directly via a dedicated phone number, ensuring that complaints are addressed and monitored more efficiently. In addition, GMN will conduct odor measurements and inspections to evaluate the effectiveness of the measures taken.

Besides the establishment of the reporting system, GMN has reached agreements with J&M Egg’s Farm Modero NV regarding the treatment and covering of manure to help reduce the odor. The ministry is also investigating whether stricter regulations are necessary for farms dealing with animal manure.

The government has pledged to closely monitor the situation and, if necessary, take further actions to address the issue.
