Renovation of Punda’s Marshe Faces Major Delays

WILLEMSTAD The long-awaited renovation of the Marshe in Punda has been hit with significant delays, and there is still no clear timeline for completion. According to local reports, both technical and financial challenges are to blame.

The project began in the first quarter of 2023, following a public tender in November 2022. Nearly two years later, work is still unfinished.

Vendors Displaced

When the renovation started in 2023, all commercial activity inside the Marshe was halted, and vendors with stalls or shops were relocated. The move sparked protests, as many sellers were transferred to less secure areas to sell their goods, while others shut down entirely because the new location was unsuitable for their business.

Dispute Over Electrical Installations

One of the key reasons for the delay is a dispute between the contractor and utility company Aqualectra over the installation of electricity meters. Aqualectra insists that all meters be placed in one central location to simplify meter reading. However, this has proven technically difficult due to limited space in the existing infrastructure. Meeting Aqualectra’s requirements would require additional investments.

Funding Gap

On top of the technical issues, the project now faces a funding shortfall. Additional financing will be needed before the renovation can be completed.

For now, the reopening of the iconic Punda marketplace remains uncertain, leaving both vendors and the public in limbo.
