Regulation for collective pension for the hospitality sector signed

Local | By Press release January 20, 2024

Joint effort of the Curaçao Restaurant Association, KHN Curaçao, Guardian Group, and the Ministry of SOAW results in the establishment of a regulated pension system

WILLEMSTAD - Several parties, including Minister Larmonie-Cecilia of the Ministry of Social Development, Labor, and Welfare (SOAW), dedicated to the well-being of employees in the hospitality industry, were present yesterday at the signing of a groundbreaking collective pension scheme for the entire hospitality sector. This achievement was realized through the efforts of the Curaçao Restaurant Association, KHN Curaçao, the Ministry of SOAW, and Guardian Group. This joint effort marks a historic milestone as it ensures a collective pension for one of the island's largest and most essential industries; the hospitality sector.

"For quite some time, I have been advocating for an improved employment structure with good working conditions for employees in the hospitality sector. Often, employees in this sector start with a minimum wage and end up with a minimum wage after 30 years of service, receiving only a national pension (AOV) after their active working years," said Minister Larmonie-Cecilia. "There was a lack of a salary structure and a regulated pension system, leaving our dedicated hospitality workers uncertain about their financial situation after their active working years. This was one of the reasons why people avoided working in this sector."

The signing of this agreement goes beyond merely ensuring pensions for the hospitality sector. It also signifies a positive step for the entire island. The lack of a structured pension system on the island is a general concern, and this collaboration demonstrates that, despite its complexity, steps are being taken that can bring about a positive change not only for the hospitality sector but also for other sectors on the island.

The involvement of KHN Curaçao and Guardian Group in establishing this scheme was crucial, and they played a pivotal role in shaping the new pension arrangement. Minister Larmonie-Cecilia emphasizes, "With the signing of this agreement, we are not only creating policies and structure but also a future in which hospitality workers can work in the hospitality industry with peace of mind. They can now retire with confidence and enjoy well-deserved leisure time."
