Red Cross appeals for assistance in building reconstruction

Local | By Correspondent May 23, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - Red Cross Curaçao has issued a call for financial support to complete the reconstruction of its facility, which was destroyed by fire in Suffisant in May 2020. The aid organization made this announcement during a press conference.

While insurance covered a portion of the costs, it fell short of the total amount needed. An additional 500,000 guilders is required to ensure that the new building meets all construction regulations. To raise funds, collections will be organized, alongside a radio telethon, as announced during the Monday afternoon press conference.

"Despite being affiliated with the Red Cross Netherlands, our organization does not receive financial assistance for the construction of the new building. The aid we receive is solely directed towards assisting those in need and responding to emergencies," stated Chairman Alfred Palm.

During the press conference, the aid organization reflected on the significant impact of the fire. The previous building was where food packages were prepared for families heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic at the time. It also served as a training space for volunteers and storage for emergency supplies.

In early May, the Red Cross received a donation from Lucille George-Wout, the Governor of Curaçao, as part of the collection month, further contributing to the building's reconstruction.

The collections and radio telethon will take place on May 28, marking exactly three years since the fire incident.
