LEIDEN - A record number of Dutch citizens contracted dengue abroad in the first seven months of 2024, according to emergency center Eurocross. So far, 112 people have fallen ill this year due to the bite of a mosquito infected with the dengue virus, compared to 113 cases reported for all of 2023.
Eurocross, which assists Dutch nationals abroad when they fall ill, expects to receive over 200 dengue reports from Dutch travelers by the end of the year for the first time. Most of the cases this year were contracted in Indonesia, Thailand, and Curaçao, the emergency center reports.
Symptoms of dengue include high fever, severe headaches often located behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, skin rash, and nausea.
