Rear-End Collisions Most Common Type of Accident in Curaçao

Local | By Correspondent February 25, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – Rear-end collisions were the most common type of traffic accident on Curaçao in 2024. These accidents, where one vehicle crashes into the back of another, accounted for 24 percent of all registered incidents. This is according to data collected by ForenSys.

The frequency of rear-end collisions may indicate traffic issues such as insufficient following distance, distractions from mobile phones, and unexpected braking. The risk of such accidents increases, especially in busy traffic areas like intersections and roundabouts. Poor road conditions and sudden obstacles can also contribute.

In addition to rear-end collisions, side-impact crashes occurred in almost 18 percent of cases, followed by damages from side-scrapes at nearly 15 percent. Accidents involving vehicles reversing also accounted for almost 15 percent, while single-vehicle accidents, such as vehicles leaving the road, made up just over 13 percent of registered incidents.

The total number of traffic accidents on Curaçao in 2024 saw a slight increase compared to the previous year. A total of 11,294 incidents were recorded, compared to 11,088 in 2023.

There were 18 fatal traffic accidents in 2024, accounting for 0.2 percent of the total. This number is lower than in 2023, when 20 fatal accidents were recorded. However, the number of incidents involving injuries rose from 2,100 in 2023 to 2,234 in 2024. This means that in nearly 20 percent of all traffic accidents, at least one person was injured.

The ForenSys report also shows that men were more often involved in traffic accidents than women. In 58.6 percent of cases, the driver was male, while women accounted for 35.9 percent of involved drivers.
