WILLEMSTAD - The Regulatory Authority of Curaçao (RAC), in partnership with the Ministry of Traffic, Transportation, and Spatial Planning (VVRP) and UNESCO Curaçao, is organizing an exclusive training program titled "Masterclass Upgrading Journalism." This intensive course, scheduled from November 23 to 30, is aimed at journalists and newsmakers seeking to enhance their skills and knowledge.
The masterclass will focus on three core themes: the journalist as a professional, journalism in Curaçao, and the evolving role of journalists in the future. Experienced instructors from the Netherlands, Suriname, and Curaçao will lead the sessions, offering participants insights from their years of expertise. The program will conclude with a panel discussion featuring three prominent local journalists sharing their perspectives on the state of journalism and the topics covered in the masterclass. Participants who successfully complete the program will receive a certificate.
Journalism in Curaçao, like elsewhere in the world, is undergoing significant changes. The local media landscape is dynamic and diverse, heavily influenced by the rise of social media and influencers. While many news organizations have strengthened their digital presence, the limited size of newsrooms often poses challenges for in-depth reporting and investigative journalism.
The rapid development of social media, artificial intelligence, and global shifts has increased the pressure on journalists to continuously adapt and upgrade their skills. To meet international media standards, journalists and newsmakers must regularly update their knowledge and methodologies. Without this, they risk falling behind in addressing the evolving media environment. This masterclass offers them an opportunity to prepare for these challenges and enhance their capacity to meet future demands.
Although RAC does not influence media content, the organization recognizes the vital role of a strong and independent press in societal development. By facilitating this masterclass, RAC demonstrates its commitment to fostering a sustainable future for journalism. Its collaboration with the government and UNESCO Curaçao underscores a shared vision of promoting quality journalism.
RAC, Minister Charles Cooper, and UNESCO Curaçao believe this masterclass will not only contribute to the professional growth of individual journalists and newsmakers but also positively impact the quality of media in Curaçao. This, in turn, supports the development of a prosperous society through independent and high-quality journalism.
