THE HAGUE - PVV MP Peter van Haasen has submitted written questions to State Secretary Zsolt Szabó regarding political instability and corruption in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. Van Haasen is concerned about the widespread corruption in the Kingdom's autonomous countries, including Curaçao, Aruba, and Sint Maarten.
In his questions, Van Haasen asks whether the State Secretary is aware of the unstable political situation and numerous corruption cases in these countries. He cites recent reports of politicians in Sint Maarten being arrested on suspicion of election fraud and accepting bribes.
He also highlights incidents such as the shooting death of a politician’s spouse in Sint Maarten and corruption scandals involving politicians in Aruba.
Van Haasen inquires whether State Secretary Szabó agrees that good governance and economic self-sufficiency are only achievable with an honest administration free from corruption.
Additionally, he asks whether the Netherlands can play a role in monitoring corruption in these countries, potentially using criteria from Transparency International.
Van Haasen emphasizes that the Netherlands should take a more prominent role in ensuring the integrity of governance.
