WILLEMSTAD - Last Friday, a significant development unfolded at the courthouse as five individuals faced trial for the possession of illegal firearms. Among them, four were convicted and sentenced to imprisonment ranging from fourteen to twenty months. However, one suspect was acquitted due to insufficient evidence linking the firearm to him.
The Public Prosecution Service of Curaçao has emphasized the gravity of illegal firearm possession, labeling it as a persistent issue that gravely endangers the safety of the community. The recent trial shed light on the severity of the problem, prompting renewed efforts to address it effectively.
Between December 2023 and February 2024, law enforcement authorities undertook various measures resulting in the confiscation of multiple firearms. This proactive approach underscores the commitment to combatting illegal firearm possession and ensuring public safety.
In collaboration with the Action Center for Undermining Curaçao (ACOC) and other pertinent judicial bodies, concerted efforts are underway to tackle the root causes of this issue. According to the firearms ordinance in Curaçao, possessing a firearm or ammunition without proper authorization from the government is strictly prohibited. Exceptions include permissions granted to law enforcement agencies or shooting clubs.
The consequences of violating this prohibition are severe, as offenders can face imprisonment for up to four years or a fine of up to ten thousand guilders. These stringent measures reflect the determination to uphold law and order while safeguarding the well-being of the community.
