WILLEMSTAD – The Public Prosecution Service (OM) is expanding its investigation into the case surrounding the death of Colombian woman Leana Carbonell Alvarado.
So far, the OM, police, and the Ministry of Justice have provided little explanation regarding the decision-making or the reasons for this follow-up investigation—a silence that is raising questions among the public.
Death Initially Declared Natural
Leana Carbonell Alvarado passed away on October 2, 2024. After the police declared her death to be from natural causes, doubts both locally and internationally arose about the accuracy of that statement.
The woman had reportedly arrived in Curaçao a few days earlier with plans to continue her travels to Poland. When immigration officials discovered that she did not have the proper documentation, she was immediately detained and transferred to the immigration holding facility at the SDKK prison.
Later, it emerged that the woman had complained about her health for several days, but the authorities failed to intervene for unclear reasons. On October 2, 2024, she passed away, and the case was closed with the statement that she died of natural causes.
Secret Investigation by Landsrecherche
In response, the Landsrecherche launched a covert investigation into the exact circumstances of her death.
At the same time, parliamentarian Gwendell Mercelina submitted several written questions about the incident and its transparency, but these have gone unanswered.
OM spokesperson Roderick Gouverneur stated that the Landsrecherche will be concluding the investigation soon.
This development has left many wondering whether the full details surrounding the death of Leana Carbonell Alvarado will ever be made public.
