WILLEMSTAD – The Public Prosecution Service has announced today that it will take a strict stance against any disruption of public order during Carnival. This follows an earlier statement by the Minister of Justice. A list of penalties for violations has been published, highlighting the fines individuals could face for not adhering to the rules.
For example, insulting behavior will result in a 400 guilders fine, while threatening behavior will incur a 500 guilders fine. Public intoxication will carry a 300 guilders fine, and failure to comply with a police order will also result in a 400 guilders fine. Individuals who pay immediately will receive a 15% discount on the fine.
Under the Firearms Regulation, the Public Prosecution Service has issued an order for preventive searches to be carried out by the police, effective before, during, and after the carnival parades. This allows the police to conduct searches for weapons based on a reasonable suspicion, even in the absence of prior suspicion.
Both the KPC (Police Corps) and the Public Prosecution will also enforce strict traffic regulations, particularly focusing on motorcycle riders, scooters, quads, and cars. Drivers and passengers of two-wheeled vehicles must wear properly fitted helmets as required by law. Additionally, activities like drifting, hopping, and revving with cars, motorcycles, scooters, or other vehicles will not be tolerated. In such cases, the vehicle will be seized, and the driver will be arrested.
Drivers of cars, motorcycles, scooters, and quads are also required to have a valid inspection card, tax card, insurance proof, and a valid driver’s license. Those who fail to comply with these regulations will be arrested, and their vehicles will be confiscated.
The government has made it clear that this enforcement will help maintain order and safety throughout the Carnival festivities.
