Public Prosecution and Police Launch Carnival Campaign to Curb Aggression

Local, | By Correspondent February 13, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Public Prosecution Service and the Curaçao Police Force have launched a visible awareness campaign during the Carnival season aimed at preventing aggression and disturbances of public order.

The campaign clearly communicates the fines that apply to acts such as assault, threats and resisting police officers, sending the message that misconduct will result in immediate financial penalties.

Under the current policy, simple assault can lead to an immediate fine of 510 guilders. If payment is delayed, the amount can increase to 600 guilders, and in the event of a court procedure, the fine may rise to 720 guilders.

Verbal threats carry a fine of 425 guilders if paid immediately, which can increase to 600 guilders if the case proceeds before a judge. Resisting a public official in the execution of their duties is also punishable by a fine of 510 guilders, with higher amounts applicable if the case is not settled directly.

The campaign is being disseminated through social media and is visibly present during Carnival events. Authorities say the goal is to act preventively during a period when pressure on public order traditionally increases.

According to the Public Prosecution Service, the approach fits within the existing “lik-op-stuk” policy, meaning swift and direct enforcement. The intention is to prevent escalation by making the consequences of criminal behavior immediately clear, particularly during large-scale public festivities.

Justice officials emphasize that aggressive behavior will not be tolerated and that rapid handling of offenses will remain a priority throughout the Carnival season.
