Public Health Inspection imposes a second heightened supervision on CMC

Local | By Correspondent November 6, 2023

WILLEMSTAD – The Public Health Inspection has expressed its dissatisfaction with the attitude of CMC in a sharp letter to the Board of Directors of CMC. Inspector-General Sirving Keli has serious objections to the way the management behaves and is indignant about the allegations made against him, criticizing and casting doubt on the intention of the Inspection to impose administrative enforcement.

The Inspection has now imposed a second heightened supervision on CMC, this time regarding the referral of patients to the Advent Hospital and the International Curaçao Clinic. Earlier, the hospital was placed under heightened supervision due to ongoing issues with the operating rooms and waiting lists.

In his correspondence, Keli points out the responsibility of the CMC management to ensure the quality and timeliness of hospital care and to comply with healthcare legislation. He emphasizes that CMC is responsible for maintaining the public's trust in healthcare, and the Inspection should not be blamed for the hospital's shortcomings.

Keli also makes it clear that the hospital has a general referral obligation and refers to the Healthcare Institutions National Ordinance to reinforce his point. He demands that the CMC management inform him weekly on Mondays about the progress in patient referrals.

The Inspection will hold regular meetings with CMC and the Advent Hospital, and if applicable, the Curaçao International Clinic, to closely monitor the situation and make necessary adjustments. The second heightened supervision will remain in place until the situation at the national hospital regarding waiting lists is normalized.

This development follows a period in which the Inspection had already threatened CMC with administrative enforcement for not following referral instructions. Although Keli decided not to impose administrative enforcement, the pressure on the hospital remains high with the imposition of new heightened supervision.
