Protective fence installed around Dr. Da Costa Gomez statue to preserve national heritage

Local | By Press release November 21, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The Foundation for the Statue of Mr. Dr. Moises Frumencio Da Costa Gomez has provided insight into the recent installation of a protective fence around the monument honoring Curaçao’s national hero.

The fence was introduced as a respectful measure to safeguard the statue as a symbol of the nation’s history and pride. Since its restoration and the unveiling of the renovated statue on December 15, 2023, the foundation has observed several instances of inappropriate activities in the area. These include parking motorcycles on the statue’s pedestal, using the site for children’s play, and leaving trash behind. Such behavior demonstrates a lack of respect for this important cultural heritage and highlights the necessity for protective measures.

The foundation noted that in many countries, fences are commonly used to preserve national monuments and protect significant historical and cultural symbols. As a representation of the Statute of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the solidarity of the former Netherlands Antilles, the statue of Dr. Da Costa Gomez deserves the same respectful treatment.

This fence, however, is not just a physical barrier. Its design incorporates panels featuring the silhouettes of the six islands that once formed the Netherlands Antilles, symbolizing the shared struggle for the Kingdom’s Statute. Additionally, two front panels include historical details and information to educate visitors about the monument’s significance.

The statue honors the legacy of Dr. Da Costa Gomez, a key figure who helped transition the Netherlands Antilles from colonial rule to internal self-governance. The foundation hopes that this protective measure will foster greater respect and appreciation for the monument’s meaning among the Curaçao community and future generations.

Gratitude was extended to all contributors who supported the funding of the protective fence, which now stands as a testament to preserving Curaçao’s rich cultural and historical heritage.
