Prosecutor’s Office collects highest total amount in compensation ever

WILLEMSTAD - In 2023, a total of 78 individuals reached payment agreements with the Prosecutor’s Office (OM) for paying compensation, including 37 prisoners. In total, over 155,000 guilders in compensation was collected, with approximately 40,000 guilders coming from inmates. This marks a milestone, as the OM has never before collected such a high amount in compensation, particularly from prisoners. This information is detailed in the 2023 annual report.

The OM attributes this success to the efforts of the team responsible for compensation. For instance, convicted individuals receive letters about payment options, and the team now also uses WhatsApp to communicate.

A compensation order is an additional penalty that a judge can impose. A convicted individual is required to pay a specific amount to the injured party. If (full) payment is not made, substitute imprisonment is imposed. However, this does not mean that the payment of compensation is waived.
